10 ESSENTIAL DUAS FOR CHILDREN

When our kids start to grow up, we try our best to teach them something new every day. Unfortunately, we mostly focus on worldly things and do not concentrate on religious studies. As Muslim parents, it is our duty to teach our children about our religion as well. Teaching Islamic simple duas to the kids can help us take the first steps towards introducing Islamic studies to our kids.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) has taught us different small duas for kids that can help them in every step of life. Some of the easy and short duas for children with meaning are mentioned below:              

DUA BEFORE STARTING ANYTHING NEW:

Arabic: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Roman English: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

English Translation: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 399

Significance: This short dua reminds the young kids that before starting anything new, they must remember ALLAH. It is a very short but powerful dua that tells them that ALLAH(SWT) is the most merciful. He is the only one who can help in every stage of life.

DUA BEFORE SLEEPING

Arabic: اللّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَأَ مُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Roman English: Allahumma Bismika amutu wa ahya

English Translation: In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari 6312

Significance: This bedtime dua helps them remember ALLAH before going to sleep. It also strengthens the faith of kids in ALLAH (SWT).

DUA FOR WAKING UP  

Arabic: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Roman English: Alhamdulillahil ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi an-nushur

English Translation: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and to him we shall return.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari 6314

Significance: This Islamic dua for kids is the best way of expressing gratitude to ALLAH (SWT). With this dua kids learn to thank ALLAH, as soon as they wake up.

DUAS FOR KIDS’ SAFETY   

Arabicأَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Roman English: A’udhu bikalimatillah at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

English Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 2708

Significance: With this dua children get under the protection of ALLAH (SWT) . It helps the kids from all sorts of evil, diseases, and mishappenings. Moreover, the Holy Prophet also recited this dua for his grandsons. Kids must memorize this dua for safety and recite it twice a day.

 DUA FOR HEALTH   

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي

Roman English: Allahumma ‘afini fi badani, Allahumma ‘afini fi sam’i, Allahumma ‘afini fi basari

English Translation: O Allah, grant health to my body, hearing, and sight.

Reference: Abu Dawood 5090

Significance: This is one of the best Islamic dua for kids. With this dua kids ask for the overall health of their body. It protects them from all sorts of diseases as well.

KIDS DUA FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR  

Arabic:اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي لأَحْسَنِ الأَخْلاقِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لا يَهْدِي لأَحْسَنِهَا إِلا أَنْتَ ، وَاصْرِفْ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا لا يَصْرِفُ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا إِلا أَنْتَ

Roman English: Allahumma ihdini li ahsanil-akhlaq, fainahu la yahdi li ahsaniha illa anta, wasrif anni sayyi’aha, la yasrif anni sayyi’aha illa anta

Meaning: O Allah, guide me to the best of character, as none can guide to it except You. And turn away from me bad character, as none can turn it away except You.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 771

Significance: This Islamic prayer for the kids helps them ask Allah for good manners and for protection from bad behavior. By reciting this dua kids ask ALLAH for the best character.

KIDS DUA FOR GUIDANCE  

Arabic:رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوْبَنَا بَعْدَ اِذْ هَدَیْتَنَا وَ هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ رَحْمَةًۚ-اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ

Roman English: Rabbana la tuzigh qulubana ba’da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab

Meaning: Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.

Reference: Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:8

Significance: The above-mentioned dua teaches the children to seek guidance from ALLAH (SWT). It reminds kids that he is the most compassionate and he is the only bestower.

DUA FOR SUCCESS IN EXAMS 

Arabic:قَالَ رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِیْ صَدْرِیْ(25)وَ یَسِّرْ لِیْۤ اَمْرِیْ(26)وَ احْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّنْ لِّسَانِیْ(27)یَفْقَهُوْا قَوْلِیْ

Roman English: Qola Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlu-l ‘uqdatan min lisani yafqahu qawli

Meaning: My Lord, open my chest for me, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.

Reference: Surah Taha, 20:25-28

Significance: This dua for young kids is beneficial for students who feel nervous or need confidence in exams. Hazrat Musa (AS) recited this dua when ALLAH (SWT) asked him to stand against Firaun.

DUA FOR KINDNESS TO PARENTS  

Arabic: رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Roman English: Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani sagheera

Meaning: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.

Reference: Surah Al-Isra, 17:24

Significance: ALLAH (SWT) has mentioned kindness with parents several times in the Holy Quran. Being kind to the parents is every child’s responsibility. Hence children must recite this dua every day.

DUA FOR TRAVELLING

Arabic: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Roman English: Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wama kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon

Meaning: Glory is to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could not have otherwise subdued it. And indeed, to our Lord, we will surely return.

Reference: Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13-14

Significance: This Islamic prayer helps instill a sense of reliance on Allah for safety and guidance.

All these duas are for the children to memorize. These are quite simple duas but they are highly rewarding and help the children in their daily activities. ALLAH (SWT) and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) have taught these duas through the Holy Quran and Sunnah because they are extremely beneficial for us.
